A MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL

As well as favourites from Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Bruch, Orchestra Pro Anima’s next concert at Christ Church features the double bass in Bottesini’s famous Gran Duo for violin and bass. I’m thrilled to be playing this with Tom Martin who, like Bottesini, is a bit of a renaissance man! As well as his work with LSO and New York Philharmonic, he also makes double basses. Bottesini started by being a violinist and then switched to the bass when he found out he could get a scholarship to study, as he had no money. Later he composed operas and many works for the bass.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Concert at Christ Church Malvern with Eleanor and Irina on Sunday 22nd September 2019

Concert at Christ Church Malvern with Eleanor and Irina on Sunday 22nd September 2019

We welcome back Eleanor and Irina on Sunday 22nd September at 3.00 p.m.

And we can’t wait. We know a fabulous afternoon awaits as, after hearing Eleanor and Irina last year, the audience immediately started saying, “when will they be back?” So, here we are, a year on and here they are.
If you missed their last visit to Christ Church, Malvern born violinist Eleanor Percy and pianist Irina Lyakhovskaya have been performing recitals together since 2000. They gave their Wigmore Hall debut in 2005 to critical acclaim and have since returned to perform there several times. They have given concerts at many of Europe’s leading venues, including the Southbank Centre, St Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, Porto Coliseum and the Smetana Hall in Prague. Their work has been broadcast on BBC television and radio and featured on Classic FM. They have recorded works the complete Mozart Sonatas for the Melodiya label.
We can anticipate a glorious afternoon with a programme that includes works by Beethoven, Dvorak and Franck, see the programme our back page.

Tickets £12 (students £6) on the door and can be reserved by e mailing angie@christchurch.org.uk and you can also view their website for more information at www.percy-lyakhovskaya.com

Midsummer Malvern 21-30 June 2019

Midsummer Malvern 21-30 June 2019

CHRIST CHURCH ARE VERY HAPPY TO WELCOME MIDSUMMER MALVERN

Midsummer Malvern 21-30 June 2019

The underlying theme to this year’s community civic week is MUSIC but there is much more as well. This year we will be raising money to give St Richard’s Hospice as we are supporting their Build 2020 programme.

We start the Week with a Czech evening to celebrate our twinning connection with Marianske Lasne in the Czech Republic. A get-together to taste, drink and enjoy music and film.

There is a walk from Rosebank Gardens to the Beacon, following the Piper. Bring a picnic and enjoy the views from the top and music to fill the air. This event is one of many in support of St Richard’s Hospice so hopefully the evening will be a lovely summer one and many people will come.

There is a local Community Choirs concert in the Forum – we have such talented choirs in our area.  There are two musical events being performed by Malvern St James and Malvern College.   The finale of Midsummer Malvern will be at The Cube when the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Combo Sapiens from Barcelona will show us what the younger generation can do.    A family event, with food available for purchase, this should be a great relaxed evening.

AND AT CHRIST CHURCH

Elgar and the Novelist

27 June at 7.30pm

Timothy Day and Sue Gee discuss two novels. Gerontius, by James Hamilton-Patterson, reimagines Elgar’s journey up the Amazon in 1923. In Sue Gee’s Trio, Elgar’s piano pieces called Dream Children weave their way in and out of the story. Join us for a delightful evening of words and music.

Sue Gee is the author of many novels, including two set on the Welsh borders: The Hours of the Night and The Mysteries of Glass. Trio is her most recent, about the lives of three young musicians in 1930s Northumberland. She lives in London and Herefordshire.

Timothy Day, who lives in Plas Gwyn, Elgar’s house in Hereford, is a musician and cultural historian. His most recent book was published in 2018, I Saw Eternity the Other Night: King’s College, Cambridge, and an English singing style.

Tickets £10 including wine and nibbles are available from Ticket Source.

This is a week packed full of events put on by the community of Malvern, visits to places of interest, chance to find out more about places in Malvern, where to enjoy a cream tea, there is something for everyone. Sporting events are happening – a cricket match and a cycle ride!

All the details are in the Midsummer Malvern Programme,  www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk and there will be prompts on the Malvern Civic Society Facebook page.
