Midsummer Malvern 21-30 June 2019

CHRIST CHURCH ARE VERY HAPPY TO WELCOME MIDSUMMER MALVERN

Midsummer Malvern 21-30 June 2019

The underlying theme to this year’s community civic week is MUSIC but there is much more as well. This year we will be raising money to give St Richard’s Hospice as we are supporting their Build 2020 programme.

We start the Week with a Czech evening to celebrate our twinning connection with Marianske Lasne in the Czech Republic. A get-together to taste, drink and enjoy music and film.

There is a walk from Rosebank Gardens to the Beacon, following the Piper. Bring a picnic and enjoy the views from the top and music to fill the air. This event is one of many in support of St Richard’s Hospice so hopefully the evening will be a lovely summer one and many people will come.

There is a local Community Choirs concert in the Forum – we have such talented choirs in our area.  There are two musical events being performed by Malvern St James and Malvern College.   The finale of Midsummer Malvern will be at The Cube when the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Combo Sapiens from Barcelona will show us what the younger generation can do.    A family event, with food available for purchase, this should be a great relaxed evening.

AND AT CHRIST CHURCH

Elgar and the Novelist

27 June at 7.30pm

Timothy Day and Sue Gee discuss two novels. Gerontius, by James Hamilton-Patterson, reimagines Elgar’s journey up the Amazon in 1923. In Sue Gee’s Trio, Elgar’s piano pieces called Dream Children weave their way in and out of the story. Join us for a delightful evening of words and music.

Sue Gee is the author of many novels, including two set on the Welsh borders: The Hours of the Night and The Mysteries of Glass. Trio is her most recent, about the lives of three young musicians in 1930s Northumberland. She lives in London and Herefordshire.

Timothy Day, who lives in Plas Gwyn, Elgar’s house in Hereford, is a musician and cultural historian. His most recent book was published in 2018, I Saw Eternity the Other Night: King’s College, Cambridge, and an English singing style.

Tickets £10 including wine and nibbles are available from Ticket Source.

This is a week packed full of events put on by the community of Malvern, visits to places of interest, chance to find out more about places in Malvern, where to enjoy a cream tea, there is something for everyone. Sporting events are happening – a cricket match and a cycle ride!

All the details are in the Midsummer Malvern Programme,  www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk and there will be prompts on the Malvern Civic Society Facebook page.

With their debut performance in Christchurch, Malvern, this exciting new ensemble brings a fresh flavour of high-quality music. Like the Black Pear, the ensemble is synonymous and unique to the county. BPSW aims to build upon Worcestershire’s legendary musical heritage with performances of original music for Wind Orchestras at the highest standard. In addition to this, BPSW endeavour to create their own legacy by developing educational links throughout the county.

BPSW provides the opportunity for instrumentalists of wind, brass and percussion to perform original wind orchestra repertoire as part of a, semi-professional ensemble. They are certainly a group to enjoy live in order to experience the full power of this exciting, new wind ensemble and the challenging music they perform with talent, quality and a formidable dynamic range.

The concert on 2nd February includes a range of works celebrating English composers including Malcolm Arnold, Arthur Sullivan and Gustav Holst. The programme also showcases modern day, English composers who specifically create works for the genre of Symphonic Wind ensembles including a piece by Martin Ellerby, ‘Elgar Variations’, written as a tribute to the famous Worcestershire composer, Edward Elgar.
